Starting October 1, 2026, Romania will implement significant changes to the road tax system, including new rovinieta tariffs based on vehicle pollution levels. Older vehicles will face higher fees, while electric and Euro VI vehicles will benefit from lower rates. Additionally, bridge tolls will be eliminated, and a new distance-based toll system, TollRo, will be introduced for freight vehicles. The government anticipates substantial revenue from these changes, with an estimated 1.1 billion lei in the first three months. The new tariffs will vary significantly, with older vehicles seeing increases of up to 25%.
