David Popovici qualified for the 100m freestyle final at the European Swimming Championships in Paris, setting a new competition record of 46.72 seconds. He dominated his semifinal, leading from start to finish. The current world record is held by China's Pan Zhanle at 46.40 seconds. Other competitors included Egor Kornev and Luca Hoek le Guenedal, who finished with times of 47.27 and 47.26 seconds, respectively. Popovici previously won consecutive European titles in this event in 2022 and 2024. He will compete in the final on August 12.
