In May 2026, Romania's public administration external debt reached 599.946 billion lei, marking an increase from the previous month. The central public administration's debt was 593.117 billion lei, while local administration debt stood at 6.83 billion lei. Approximately 78.5% of the external debt was in government bonds. The internal public administration debt also rose to 594.1 billion lei, representing 30.5% of GDP. Overall, the total public debt reached 1.194 trillion lei, increasing from 1.171 trillion lei in April 2026, with a GDP ratio of 61.4%. Medium and long-term debt rose to 1.139 trillion lei, while short-term debt decreased. The majority of the debt was in government bonds, with significant amounts in national currency, euros, and US dollars.
