Denmark aims to be ready by the end of 2027 to send undocumented migrants to a return center outside the EU, as five member states prepare plans for such facilities. Danish Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov is meeting with counterparts from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Greece to discuss concrete measures for establishing the first EU agreement with a non-EU country regarding return centers. The initiative is part of broader European efforts to expedite the return of individuals without legal residency. However, it has faced criticism from human rights organizations concerned about potential risks to asylum seekers' rights. The Council of Europe has warned of significant human rights risks associated with these return mechanisms.
