Italian doctors successfully performed a world-first transplant of the macula, restoring vision to a woman who had been blind for five years. The 67-year-old patient, Elena, lost her sight due to a severe car accident that caused irreversible damage to her optic nerve. Despite her left eye being intact, her right eye suffered from severe trauma and maculopathy, making traditional corneal grafts impossible. The medical team, led by Professor Michele Reibaldi, overcame this challenge by transferring healthy tissues from the left eye to the right, including the macula. Initial results are promising, although further evaluation is needed to assess the technique's effectiveness.
