Cum și-a ascuns România tezaurul de sovietici și de nemți la o mănăstire: 192 tone de aur, duse la Tismana în cadrul Operațiunii Neptun

In the spring and summer of 1944, as World War II approached Romania, the National Bank of Romania decided to hide its gold reserve to protect it from potential Soviet occupation and German requisition. The gold, totaling 192.3 tons, was transported to Tismana Monastery and later moved to a nearby cave for safekeeping until 1947. This decision was influenced by the traumatic experience of losing Romania's gold to the Bolsheviks during World War I. The BNR leadership, recalling the past, sought to avoid a repeat of history by taking urgent measures to safeguard the national treasure amidst the chaos of war. Various options were considered, including attempts to evacuate the gold abroad, but ultimately, the decision was made to keep it within Romania.
