Traditional refining relies on energy-intensive distillation, while the membrane process sorts molecules based on size and chemical properties. Initial tests showed recovery rates between 85% and 90% with a projected 91% reduction in energy use compared to conventional methods. If successful on an industrial scale, this innovation could lower operational costs and enhance product value in China's vast oil industry, which is currently facing challenges in imports and processing capacity.
