The National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS) released documents detailing Romanian emigration to West Germany from 1987 to 1989. During this period, 47,132 emigration requests were filed, with 35,486 approved. Many Romanians sought to leave through both legal and illegal means, with 5,536 individuals remaining abroad after trips. The documents highlight the significant number of ethnic Germans among those seeking to emigrate, as well as the bureaucratic challenges faced. The data also reveal demographic trends, showing a majority of applicants were women and many were young adults. The release sheds light on the desperate measures taken by Romanians to escape the communist regime.
