In Romania, cars dominate passenger transport, but air travel accounts for a surprisingly high 19.9%, according to Eurostat data for 2024. Cars made up 65.8% of passenger transport, while buses and coaches contributed 11.3%. The share of air transport is significantly higher than that of trains, which only reached 3.1%. Eurostat's calculations are based on passenger-kilometers, emphasizing the impact of long-distance flights. In the EU, cars represented 69.2% of passenger transport, with air travel at 15.8% and trains at 7.5%. Romania's rail transport share is notably lower than the EU average, while air transport exceeds it by over four percentage points. This year marked a significant increase in rail transport's share across the EU, surpassing bus and coach transport for the first time since 2014.
