The controller, with 25 years of experience, noted it was unprecedented to see two planes 'merge' with the same flight identifier. The flights, both Boeing 737-800s, were operating between Chicago and Phoenix, with one delayed and the other on time. They were approximately 4.8 kilometers apart horizontally and 610 meters vertically, within legal safety limits. The controller ensured safe passage by clearly distinguishing between the two flights and instructing pilots accordingly, allowing both to continue without incident.
