On July 31, 1957, Romania launched its first nuclear reactor, becoming the first country in Southeast Europe to achieve this milestone. The reactor, VVR-S, was developed by a team of prominent physicists at the Măgurele research center, led by Horia Hulubei. This initiative was part of Romania's scientific ambitions rather than military goals, as the country sought to utilize its uranium resources for peaceful purposes. The reactor was operational until 1997 and played a significant role in research and the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications.
