The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is tasked with reevaluating around 100 food additives approved in the EU before January 20, 2009, as mandated by a 2010 regulation. This process aims to ensure compliance with the latest scientific knowledge. Although the reevaluation was scheduled for completion in 2020, over 70% of the 315 targeted substances have been reassessed due to the extensive workload. Some additives, like titanium dioxide (E171) and Red 2G (E128), have been banned following safety concerns. Food labels must clearly list additives, indicating their function and specific substance. Additives serve various purposes, including enhancing safety and quality, and can be derived from natural, animal, or synthetic sources.
