In August 1996, shortly before his death, Nicu Ceaușescu met the controversial priest Ștefan Popa in Italy. Nicu was gravely ill and sought comfort from a religious figure. Despite Popa's dubious reputation, Nicu considered it an honor to meet him. Following his return to Romania, Nicu's health deteriorated, leading to his death from liver cirrhosis. His body was repatriated and buried in Ghencea Military Cemetery. Nicu's life was marked by a dramatic fall from grace after the 1989 revolution, facing accusations and imprisonment.
