In the first half of 2026, illegal timber discovered in Romania increased by 143% compared to the previous year, raising concerns about unreported logging. Senator Glad Varga urged citizens to report suspicious activities and questioned the effectiveness of authorities. Over 6,800 cubic meters of undocumented wood were found, with financial damages rising significantly. Varga emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of laws to protect forests and highlighted new legislation allowing penalties for repeated illegal transport. A digital platform has been launched for citizens to report illegal logging and track the resolution of their complaints.
