Romania faces a significant demographic crisis, with deaths exceeding births by over 5,600 in August 2026. The National Institute of Statistics (INS) reports a negative natural increase, with nearly 19,000 deaths and just over 13,000 births recorded. Although births increased slightly compared to the previous year, the rise in deaths deepened the natural deficit. Most deaths occurred among the elderly, particularly those over 80. The trend of higher deaths was observed in both urban and rural areas. Additionally, the INS reported 15,016 marriages and 2,105 divorces in August 2026.
