Recent research from Stanford Medicine challenges the long-held view of the brain as a single organ, suggesting it consists of two distinct systems that evolved separately. This study indicates that the human brain combines ancient nervous systems, one responsible for essential functions like breathing and heart rate, and the other linked to complex abilities such as language and abstract thinking. The findings could explain difficulties in cultivating certain brain cells in labs and open new avenues for studying conditions affecting the brainstem, like spinal muscular atrophy and ALS. Researchers discovered that the anterior and posterior brain regions originate from different progenitor cells, allowing for successful cultivation of functional posterior neurons in vitro, which may enhance understanding and treatment of related diseases.
