The XFG variant, also known as "Stratus" or "American Covid," is spreading globally, particularly in Europe and England. Symptoms include sore throat, cough, fatigue, and others, but distinguishing it from other illnesses can be challenging. XFG is not a new coronavirus strain but belongs to the Omicron family, first identified in January 2025. The European health agency ECDC monitors it, but there is currently no evidence that it causes more severe cases than existing variants. Vulnerable populations remain at higher risk for severe illness.
