South Korea has recorded its highest temperature since modern meteorological measurements began, reaching 42.5 degrees Celsius in Yangsan amid a severe heatwave. This marks the highest temperature since records started in 1904. Yangsan has experienced extreme heat for five consecutive days, with other cities like Daegu and Busan also facing high temperatures. Authorities issued heatwave alerts for over 20 areas, introducing a new warning category for extreme temperatures. The Meteorological Administration advises residents to avoid outdoor activities and warns that non-air-conditioned indoor spaces can be hazardous during such heat events.
