A study from the University of Milano-Bicocca indicates that students who open social media accounts in middle school perform worse in math and Italian. The research analyzed 5,277 students and found that early social media use correlates with lower academic results, equivalent to about six months of schooling. Students who started using social media at ages 10-11 scored lower than those who waited until 13-14. The study suggests that frequent phone checking may distract students, impacting their performance. While early computer use showed no negative effects, social media was linked to poorer outcomes. Researchers recommend waiting until 13-14 years old for social media use, alongside digital education for children and parents.
