A recent study suggests the inscription may refer to a different Pilate, not the one who sentenced Jesus. The ring, discovered in the 1960s and forgotten until 2018, features Greek letters that some researchers argue indicate a mistake in translation. Historian Catherine Bonesho proposes that the inscription should read ΠΙΛΑΤΩ, meaning 'to' or 'for Pilate', suggesting it belonged to a subordinate or a slave. This interpretation highlights the complexities of Roman administration in early Judea, rather than diminishing the artifact's historical significance.
