The air traffic control system in Greece is under severe pressure due to a record number of flights during the tourist season. On July 18, 5,082 aircraft were recorded, highlighting the strain on outdated infrastructure. A major communication failure in January exposed vulnerabilities, prompting a €300 million upgrade plan, yet key systems remain outdated. Staffing shortages exacerbate delays, with only 154 controllers available instead of the needed 250. The ongoing geopolitical situation has also increased air traffic, complicating operations further. Delays have surged, averaging 2.14 minutes this summer, raising concerns about the capacity to handle the influx of tourists.
