Normandin-Parker was subsequently struck by another vehicle. The family argued that Uber failed in its duty to ensure passenger safety. The judge noted the driver showed more concern for his car than for the passengers. Uber contended that the driver was an independent contractor and not their responsibility. The family rejected an initial settlement offer of $10 million from Uber.
