BioNTech has appointed Guido Oelkers as the new CEO, succeeding co-founder Ugur Sahin by February 2027. Oelkers, currently leading Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, specializes in product commercialization, particularly in the U.S. market. Despite significant earnings from its COVID-19 vaccine, BioNTech has faced losses and plans to close several production facilities, potentially affecting 1,860 jobs. Sahin and his wife, Ozlem Tureci, will leave BioNTech by the end of 2026 to start a new company focused on mRNA-based therapies, while remaining shareholders in BioNTech. The search for Tureci's successor is ongoing.
