The European Commission has proposed a significant reform of public procurement in the EU, aiming to encourage the use of local suppliers and allow local authorities to exclude Chinese companies from tenders. Public procurement in the EU amounts to 2 trillion euros annually, with 600 billion euros subject to competitive bidding. The reform seeks to simplify procedures by reducing regulations and creating a new platform for bids. If approved, public buyers will be required to include at least 30% non-price criteria in their procurement processes, enabling them to favor European or local options. This could effectively exclude Chinese companies from certain tenders amid rising trade tensions.
