The European Commission has proposed a common rating system for data centers to enhance energy transparency and support their integration into the European energy system. This initiative aims to triple the EU's data center capacity in the next five to seven years, which may increase energy consumption and pressure on natural resources. The rating system will provide clear information on resource usage and promote sustainable practices, such as heat reuse and clean energy generation. A public consultation on minimum performance standards is underway, with the first sustainability labels expected by 2027. The Commission emphasizes the need for energy-efficient data centers to meet growing energy demands, projected to reach 114 TWh by 2030.
