The European Commission has unveiled its vision for fishing and aquaculture by 2040, aiming to enhance economic and environmental sustainability in the sector. The strategy, titled "Vision 2040 for Fishing and Aquaculture," seeks to protect livelihoods in communities reliant on these industries, which employ over 200,000 people across the EU. It emphasizes the importance of healthy ecosystems and aims to provide businesses with the predictability needed for investment. Key priorities include energy transition, securing supply chains, and supporting producers. The Commission plans to improve energy efficiency and resource use by 2030 and will update guidelines for fishing capacity management. Additionally, it aims to promote demand for EU-produced aquatic food and enhance traceability in the supply chain by 2029.
