The Venice Commission has been asked to provide an opinion on the legality of the so-called Fritz amendment, which led to the dismissal of Timișoara's mayor, Dominic Fritz. The Commission is currently assessing the legal framework without making a direct judgment. This request was initiated by Gunn Marit Helgesen, president of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, following concerns raised by Romanian parliament members about the retroactive effects of the new law. The law could prematurely end local elected mandates, impacting democratic representation and local autonomy in Romania.
