CNSAS:„Refuzat la export”. Cum ajungeau alimente stricate pe mesele românilor în „Epoca de Aur”

Documents from 1986 released by CNSAS reveal the absurdities of Romania's economy during the Ceaușescu regime. While citizens received basic food on ration cards, large quantities of butter intended for export were left to deteriorate in warehouses. The regime prioritized paying off external debt, leading to severe reductions in domestic consumption. High-quality products were exported, while inferior goods flooded the local market. This situation fostered deep-seated distrust among consumers, a legacy of the communist state's dysfunction. CNSAS highlighted the case of the Alba Iulia Dairy Industry, where expired butter was fraudulently re-labeled for sale. The absurdities of central planning and the resulting worker tensions are also noted, illustrating how Ceaușescu's obsession with debt repayment undermined economic logic, leaving a historical legacy of scarcity and distrust.
