Starting October 1, 2026, Romania plans to implement the TollRo road tax system for vehicles over 3.5 tons, based on distance traveled and pollution levels. However, CNAIR has raised concerns about the system's readiness, citing significant errors during testing and a lack of operational staff. Despite these issues, interim Transport Minister Radu Miruță insists on launching TollRo as scheduled, emphasizing the project's European funding and its fairness compared to systems in other Western countries. The new system will replace the current road tax for heavy vehicles, incorporating distance and emission class into the fee calculation, aligning with the principle of 'the polluter pays.'
