A suspicious death at a plague research lab in Irkutsk raises fears of a pneumonic plague outbreak among locals. Daria Shipilova, a 28-year-old lab assistant, died after reportedly breaking a test tube containing the plague pathogen. Authorities have imposed quarantine measures, monitoring around 200 individuals and closing several hospitals. Initial confusion about her illness led to a misdiagnosis of severe COVID-19. Despite the rapid deterioration of her health, officials initially downplayed the situation, avoiding the term 'plague'. Rospotrebnadzor later stated she died from 'unknown etiology pneumonia', asserting the epidemiological situation is stable, which has not alleviated public concern.
