A recent study reveals that five infections are linked to over 2.3 million new cancer cases annually, highlighting the significant role of infections in cancer risk. Helicobacter pylori is the most prevalent, associated with around 760,000 cases. HPV follows closely, linked to approximately 750,000 cases. Other infections include hepatitis B, Epstein-Barr virus, and hepatitis C. The study emphasizes the importance of prevention and treatment, noting that vaccines exist for HPV and hepatitis B, but access varies globally. Most infection-related cancers occur in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in East Asia. Limited prevention tools are available for H. pylori and Epstein-Barr virus, with ongoing vaccine trials.
