In May 2026, Romania's public debt rose to 1.194 trillion lei, increasing from 1.171 trillion lei in April. The government debt now represents 61.4% of GDP, up from 60.2%. Both external and internal debts saw significant increases, with external debt reaching nearly 600 billion lei and internal debt rising to 594.1 billion lei. The majority of the debt is in government bonds, totaling approximately 956.4 billion lei. The central public administration holds the largest share of the debt, amounting to 1.166 trillion lei. These figures come ahead of discussions on salary legislation, crucial for unlocking 770 million euros from the PNRR.
