Chinese researchers have developed a method for separating crude oil components at room temperature, potentially reducing refinery energy consumption by 91%. This new technique, termed "molecular refining," utilizes chemical membranes to selectively allow certain molecules to pass while retaining others. Laboratory tests showed a recovery rate of 85-90% for high-value products from a mixture of light sweet crude oil. If scalable, this innovation could significantly lower refining costs and greenhouse gas emissions, which currently amount to approximately 1.3 gigatons of CO₂ annually. However, the technology is still in the experimental stage and its industrial application remains uncertain.
