China has expelled two high-ranking military officers, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, from the Communist Party and the army due to serious violations of discipline and law. Zhang, a close aide to President Xi Jinping, was the vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission. Both were accused of corruption, disloyalty, and negligence in their duties. Their removal follows a broader anti-corruption campaign initiated by Xi in 2012. The leadership stated that their actions severely breached political discipline and norms, forming factions and being dishonest towards the party. The announcement comes ahead of Xi's visit to the U.S. and an important party meeting in October.
