Chinese authorities announced that photovoltaic panels have become the country's primary energy source, surpassing coal for the first time. As of July, installed photovoltaic capacity reached 1,286 gigawatts, accounting for 31.5% of China's total electricity production capacity. Coal capacity stood at 1,285 gigawatts. Despite a long history as the main energy source, coal production has declined slightly, marking the first drop in six years. Meanwhile, renewable energy installations surged, with record additions last year. However, growth has slowed this year due to policy changes affecting guaranteed revenues for renewable energy. China's 15th Five-Year Plan aims for 6,000 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy by 2030.
