In the first half of 2026, China generated less than 50% of its electricity from fossil fuels for the first time, reflecting a significant shift towards renewable energy sources. The share of coal in the energy mix dropped to 49.7%, while renewable energy reached 41.2%. Despite this decline, analysts suggest coal usage may still increase due to rising energy demand. China aims for 30% of its energy mix to come from wind and solar by 2030, with potential to reach this goal by 2028. The country's reliance on coal remains higher than in other major economies, but lower than in India.
