China's Mengxiang ocean drilling vessel has achieved a national record by reaching a depth of 5,000 meters in the South China Sea, obtaining basalt samples. This milestone positions China among advanced nations in deep-sea drilling capabilities. The research team utilized remotely operated vehicles for extensive operations, marking significant advancements in international standards. The expedition's findings are crucial for understanding the South China Sea's expansion and ancient marine environments, as well as for energy resource exploration. A total of 170 researchers from nine institutions participated in this significant scientific endeavor.
