In the first quarter of 2026, Romanian households reduced their monthly expenditures to an average of 7,652 lei, a 3% decrease from the previous quarter. Average monthly income rose slightly to 8,996 lei, with salaries being the primary source. Urban households spent significantly more than rural ones, with urban expenses averaging 8,839 lei compared to 6,800 lei in rural areas. The structure of expenditures showed a high percentage allocated to consumption and taxes. Notably, food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for 31.4% of total monthly consumption expenses, while education expenses remained minimal at 23 lei per household. Overall, economic instability has led to cautious spending behavior among Romanians.
