One-third of the global population is exposed to secondhand smoke annually, leading to significant health issues and deaths among non-smokers. In 2023, 2.71 billion people faced this risk, resulting in 1.66 million deaths, including 767 million children. The study highlights the severe health impacts of passive smoking, particularly cardiovascular diseases and respiratory conditions. Despite progress in some regions, about 70% of the global population lacks comprehensive smoke-free laws. The proportion of people protected by such legislation has increased from 3% in 2007 to 33% in 2024, covering 2.6 billion individuals. Additional measures are needed to further reduce exposure.
