Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have demonstrated that sleep can be bypassed through neural stimulation in mice. By using optogenetics, scientists replicated a sleep-like neuronal pattern in awake mice, allowing them to alternate between active and resting states. This method showed that mice deprived of sleep needed less rest after receiving brain stimulation and performed better on memory tests. The findings suggest that some benefits of sleep may not rely solely on unconsciousness but rather on neuronal activity during that time.
