Researchers at the University of Florida have developed an AI tool that accurately distinguishes between two common forms of dementia. The Automated Imaging Differentiation for Dementia (AIDD) uses MRI and AI to differentiate Alzheimer's disease from Lewy body dementia. This system could enable faster and more accurate diagnoses, leading to better treatment choices. The AI was trained on 519 brain scans and successfully identified all 13 confirmed cases in a final test. Correct differentiation is crucial as misdiagnosis can worsen patient conditions. With dementia cases expected to double by 2060, precise diagnostic tools are increasingly vital.
