Researchers have successfully detected antineutrinos emitted from a nuclear reactor after it was shut down, marking a significant advancement in nuclear monitoring. This emission occurs due to the decay of long-lived fission products, which continue to release antineutrinos even when the reactor is inactive. The measurements were taken at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France using the Double Chooz detector, which identified around 100 events linked to residual radioactivity. This discovery could enhance safety and verification processes in nuclear facilities, as antineutrinos can pass through protective structures with minimal interaction. The findings provide direct experimental confirmation of theoretical predictions regarding antineutrino emissions from inactive reactors.
