Researchers have experimentally confirmed an exotic form of ice that exists under extreme pressures and temperatures, potentially explaining unusual characteristics of Uranus and Neptune. This new ice structure, known as hexagonal close-packed (hcp), was observed at pressures up to 2.3 million atmospheres and temperatures reaching 2,630 Kelvin. The study indicates that this superionic ice behaves both as a solid and a liquid, with oxygen atoms forming a rigid structure while hydrogen nuclei move freely. Understanding this ice could reshape our knowledge of the internal dynamics of ice giants and their magnetic fields.
