Scientists have experimentally identified a new form of ice that exists under extreme conditions, which could enhance our understanding of Uranus and Neptune's internal structures. The research, led by physicist Alexis Forestier, involved compressing small amounts of water to pressures up to 230 gigapascals and heating them to temperatures around 2,630 kelvins. This resulted in a hexagonal close-packed crystalline structure, previously theorized but not confirmed experimentally. The findings are significant for studying superionic ice, where oxygen atoms form a solid structure while hydrogen nuclei can move freely. Understanding these properties may help explain the unusual magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune, as well as the behavior of materials under extreme conditions.
