Researchers have developed a biodegradable battery that is thin and paper-like, designed for temporary powering of medical devices inside the body. Tested on pigs, it operated for up to three days before its components began to decompose. This technology could enable the use of ingestible medical devices without the need for battery retrieval. The battery is made from materials that degrade in the gastrointestinal tract and can be absorbed safely. It features a layered structure with a magnesium alloy anode and a molybdenum trioxide and activated carbon cathode. The team aims to improve performance and control over the battery's lifespan, with future clinical studies planned.
