By using optogenetics, scientists replicated deep sleep brain activity in awake mice, allowing neurons to alternate between active and resting states. This method showed that mice receiving brain stimulation required less sleep and performed better on memory tests. The findings suggest that some benefits of sleep may not rely solely on unconsciousness but rather on neuronal function during that time.
