Extreme drought in Romania highlights vulnerabilities of traditional nuclear plants, particularly their water cooling needs. The new Doicești nuclear plant will utilize a different design that eliminates reliance on external water sources for cooling. It will feature six modular reactors in a large underground basin, designed for passive safety systems that allow cooling without external power. This innovative approach ensures that even in emergencies, the reactors can cool down using natural processes. The project aims to replace an old coal plant with a cleaner nuclear facility, producing 462 MW of power. The project has entered its third phase after passing necessary evaluations.
