Maternal cells can persist in a child's brain for up to 19 years, a phenomenon known as microchimerism, affecting about 70% of children. Researchers found maternal cells embedded in the brain tissue of many children, indicating a significant exchange of cells during pregnancy. The study analyzed brain tissue from children with severe epilepsy, revealing that maternal DNA was present in various brain regions. Interestingly, firstborn children were more likely to carry these cells. The findings suggest that microchimerism is a normal biological process rather than a health concern, although further research is needed to understand its implications.
