Archaeologists in Turkey have uncovered a fragment of the Treaty of Kadesh, the oldest known peace treaty, detailing rules for refugees from 3,400 years ago. This cuneiform tablet, found in Hattusha, outlines how individuals fleeing between Egypt and the Hittite Empire were to be treated. It mandated the return of refugees to their home states while prohibiting harsh penalties against them. The treaty also included provisions for mutual non-aggression and assistance between the two powers. This new find adds to previously discovered pieces of the treaty, which has been known from various sources since the early 20th century.
