The Coalburn 1 battery storage power plant in Scotland has commenced commercial operations, marking the largest BESS in Europe. Developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, it has a capacity of 500 MW/1 GWh. Construction began in November 2023, and 50% of the project was sold to Axa IM Alts in April 2025. This facility enhances the UK's electric system flexibility and supports renewable energy integration. It is part of a larger portfolio of seven BESS projects totaling 4.3 GW in the UK.
